What can I use as proof of citizenship to enter Mexico?

In general, to enter Mexico you need to obtain a Tourist Card (FMM). To get your Tourist Card you will need to prove citizenship, and now passports are the only accepted form of ID for travel by air. A photo ID is very helpful when in town, so you don’t need to move around with your valuable passport. A passport can serve as proof of citizenship and photo ID. Airlines will furnish the Tourist Card. Be sure to save the FMM, as you must present this document when leaving Mexico.

What is that green-white piece of paper I kept when entering Mexico?

The green and white (FMM) piece of paper you are given when you enter the country is your Tourist Card, and it’s very important that you don’t lose it. You can get another, but the process is a pain, and you’ll spend too much of your vacation in government offices and line-ups. Keep it in a safe place until you leave, along with your passport and other documentation, preferably a security box. If you can’t find it on the way out of the country, you might be fined.

I was wondering what the customs at the Los Cabos airport are like when I arrive (will I be searched?).

Upon arrival at the Los Cabos International Airport you are asked to push a button on a random red-green ‘stoplight’ system that will determined if you are searched or not. If you get a green light, you are free to leave; if you get a red light, your luggage is searched. Check rules before entering the country.

Will I be able to use my credit cards? Can I get cash from the banks with my credit cards?

Yes, to both questions. All major credit cards (except Discover and Diners) are widely accepted. American Express has lost market in Mexico and mostly large business chains accept them, but smaller shops and stores don’t. If you are to eat in a restaurant, it is best to ask before ordering, not every business in town accepts credit cards. All the banks will give cash advances, most have ATM machines at their locations, for afterhours cash.

Currency and money matters…

The peso is Mexico’s official currency, almost all purchases can be paid in US dollars with change in pesos. Dollars are accepted almost everywhere; however large bills can be difficult to break. It’s a good idea to bring along plenty of $1’s, $5’s, and $10’s or use ATMs. If you go on an adventure out of the main tourist areas, take small denominations of pesos. Before traveling to Los Cabos, we suggest you have $200 US in small bills for tips and unexpected expenses, etc.

What about tipping and taxes?

Your waiter will only bring you your check when you request it. Tips range from 10% to 20% of the total bill. A 16% IVA (VAT) is applied to all products and services. Additional 3% lodging tax applies to hotel and vacation rental property accommodations.

What is I.V.A.?

I.V.A. (Impuesto al valor agregado), is the Mexican sales tax, it is 16% in the state of Baja California Sur.

Can I drink the water?

Salina del Mar provides purified water. In most restaurants, you will get purified water, if in doubt – ask: (Agua purificada?)

Will my cell phone work in Mexico?

There is local cellular service. Very few cellular services will allow you to roam in Mexico. Most cellphones from USA and Canada can be reprogrammed for local use in Mexico, unless they are SIM-locked.

Can I use my laptop computer to get my e-mail and have Internet access? Wi-Fi?

Salina del Mar offers free internet service. You can bring your laptop computer, iPhone, iPad and similar electronic devices.

Can we get married in Los Cabos?

YES! Los Cabos is one of the most popular wedding destinations in North America with experienced and professional wedding planning services.

Is it safe to walk around the town at night?

You should feel much safer in Los Cabos than in the United States. There is very little crime here, and what does exist is usually petty compared to the U.S. Private citizens are not permitted to own firearms. In any case, use common sense, like you would anywhere else.

What is the distance by car to…?

Locally, it is 20 miles between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. From Cabo San Lucas, it’s 30 miles to the International Airport, 45 miles to Todos Santos on the Pacific Coast, one and a half hours to Los Barriles on the East Cape, two and a half hours to the capital city of La Paz.

I want to bring my children with me, but safety is always my top concern. Is there anything for kids to do in Los Cabos?

Los Cabos is a very safe area, you won’t have problems bringing your children. Mexican people adore children and they will go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Beaches are endless entertainment for the kids. There are many boat excursions that are safe for kids and lots of watersports activities.

What about hospitals and doctors?

There are some very competent doctors in Los Cabos, medical tourism is a growing enterprise that depends on quality service on all levels. Many speak English. Check with our concierge for the name of an English- speaking doctor, write the phone number down and carry it with you. If there is any doubt in your mind about a doctor, procedure or medication, check with your doctor at home, if possible.

Are beaches private or public? Are the beaches safe?

All beaches in Mexico are public property, and are open for everyone, even the beaches in front of the hotels. While most hotels usually don’t have a problem with visitors walking through their grounds to get to the beach, it’s a good idea to ask, and to be more careful about crossing over private property to get to some of the other beaches. There are no lifeguards here and many beaches are not safe for swimming depending on the seasons.

Fabulous Christmas Vacation. This property is absolutely breath taking. Beautiful views, grounds, sunrises, and sunsets from various parts of the property. We had our family of 14 celebrating Christmas, the accommodations were perfect for family time gatherings or alone time in individual casitas when needed. Ericson’s chef service was on point everyday, she customized meals that were not on her menu which was great for some of the kids who are picky eaters. We all felt very safe on this property at all times. We will definitely be booking another trip soon.

Salina Del Mar is the perfect resort for a get away. The lush grounds, pool, beach, amenities make it so that we didn't need nor want a rental car. Our family was happy to stay on the property our whole vacation. Direct beach access for beach volleyball, cabanas on the beach for a game of cards or afternoon nap, corn hole, swimming pool there are endless activities. Chef Ericson made incredible meals (chilaquiles, home made pizza, made to order omelets, taco bar, catch of the day) for us daily and was mindful of special requests. Ericson also set up a masseuse to come a couple of days for ocean view outdoor massages, heaven. I highly recommend getting in touch with her before you visit and let her know of any requests, if she can she'll make it happen. One evening we even lit lanterns on the beach with the kids. It was a blast. Technology is also not forgotten, stereo with speakers around so that you can listen to music all day, tv for sports viewing or movies, and wifi. Technology that our whole family appreciated. Rooms are also 5 star with private bathrooms all kept up like the day you checked in. My only regret is that we didn't book a longer trip. My family is all well rested, tanned, and full of memories. We'll definitely be back. Thank you Ericson and Salina del Mar!Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Girls Getaway, Tourists without a Car, Adventure Seekers, Age 55+, Romantic Getaway, Families with Teenagers.

by Laura May on Salina del Mar

Our visit to Salina del Mar was exceptional for many reasons, most notably the herculean effort it took to ready the property in the aftermath of Odile. The owners and staff of this property take pride in every aspect of their work, and it shows. We hosted a group of 15 at this resort with private chef service and nightly bar-tending. The meals were incredible, and they assisted us in planning the food and bar menus. The bartender was outstanding and allowed us to entertain and visit with our friends. The chef runs a very professional kitchen, but makes guests feel as though they are family. Every request we made was skillfully accommodated, including an extra guest at the last minute, and a major menu change to cook the tons of fish we caught. We look forward to booking again, and hold everyone in our prayers as they continue to rebuild throughout the area. If you are looking for a private, quiet paradise with luxurious accommodations, authentic flavors and genuine hospitality this property will not disappoint. We recommend this property for first-time visits as well as experienced Cabo travelers.

Amazing spot for our group - we can't wait to go back

Just came back from our first visit to Salina del Mar with a group of friends. It will definitely not be the last visit. It's a perfect setup for a group - the rooms all feel private in case you need to get away from everyone, but the common areas are beautiful and spacious - every inch of the property is well used, with lots of separate seating and lounging areas, perfect little pool, a beautiful beachfront and gorgeous gardens. Meticulously maintained and well-staffed. Ericson and her staff took such amazing care of us - you definitely want to book her chef service - we had such amazing meals we were almost sorry to have booked one night out for dinner. We are already plotting our return - and for a longer visit!

Paradise!

What a perfect vacation spot! The view from every room was spectacular and the beautiful grounds and facilities were amazing. We had a group of 12 women and Erikson, Jorge and the rest of the staff took excellent care of us - cooking, cleaning, ordering massage services and delivering margaritas. Plenty of space on the property to spread out including a nice private palapa on the beach. It is a 20 minute cab ride to get to most restaurants, shops and activities but you really won't want to leave here if it's rest and relaxation you are looking for and they will provide anything you need. My only regret is that we didn't plan to stay longer!
